“♫ I said maybe/ you’re gonna be the one that saves me […] ♫”
Jimi Hendrix did it with Dylan’s All Along the Watchtower—this happens once in a Blue Moon— when a cover version is so unique that it eclipses the intention of the original.
Wonderwall is another one of those songs. Ryan Adams takes Noel Gallagher’s 1990’s Mancunian anthem and makes it his own. Adams arrangement on Love is Hell is softer yet haunting cover. During their 2008 tour, Adams and his Cardinals performed some killer more extended renditions of Wonderwall. After much deliberation—these two are my favorites.

“This is one of those songs that ah, I guess for a second for a second it seems funny, then you listen to it more carefully and realise, “Oh my God, it’s fucking horrifying.” I mean, it really is fucking horrifying ‘cause what I want to you to do when this song is going on -for the rest of the song- is to picture clearly just what it’s like for your girlfriend to fuck your friends and what it’s like for your friends to fuck your girlfriends, and worst of all, what it’s like for them to steal your records, ugh. Y’see what I mean? It’s fucking horrible. Okay, here comes another verse full of horror.”Counting Crows, “Come Pick Me Up” (live Ryan Adams cover)
