he put Ryan Adams on
I think he thinks it makes me weak
it only ever makes me strong.

Don’t want to overload anybody, but I tried to make a summer playlist, then got caught in the most intense fucking lightning storm, so here are some rain jams.

The fourth track on here is “Sit and Listen to the Rain” by Whiskeytown, hence the reblog here.

Seeing great shows and being around other talented folks always pushes me to work harder, to think about my craft and stay hungry. Ryan is a great example of a true artist in every sense of the world, whether he is writing his own songs (sometimes three a day), producing, doing poetry, painting or playing a musical part on one of my records. Bless the boy.

Reuniting with Ryan brought up a lot of stuff for me- all very emotional and inspirational. I had not played solo acoustic in many years, so going out in front of 2,000 or so seated people, silent and attentive, was super intense. We both were pretty nervous on that first night in CorkIreland. There’s that moment as you walk out, the silence just before the applause, and then the relief a few lines in as you settle and realize this is what you do and why you are here. We played beautiful opera houses and new modern theaters that would normally house the ballet or the Pavarotti . Places that I thought might not let me in as a regular punter if I wasn’t strumming the bird (my Hummingbird) and telling stories about my penis. The touring party was very intimate- no guitar techs, no merch people- the closest you could get to almost busking the streets. Ryan carried his own acoustic guitar in a gig bag, his Bucky (not named after Buckminster Fuller, though with Ryan it certainly could have been, but a guitar used by California country-slingerBuck Owens. It’s also the same guitar that Pat Smear of The Germs used in Nirvana’s Unplugged ). These shows are the most gratifying you’ll ever do, playing your songs the way they were conceived in their most primal state. A lot of my bits, true stories, are born out of nervous banter while having to tune up my own guitar. I got to play some new songs and a lot of older ones from my five records. It made me think a lot about my writing and my musical journey since the last time I stood up here in these parts supporting Ryan many moons ago. His show was a career-spanning set with new material popping up in different places. A new song called “Come Home” broke me up pretty bad one night as I sat in the last row of a theatre in Malmo, Sweden. Another favorite of mine was “Dirty Rain,” which took no prisoners every single night.
